Latin Name: Cereus jamacaru
Description: Often called the Cuddly Cactus, Brazilian Candle Cactus, or Queen of the Night, this unique fellow is native to semi-arid regions of Brazil. Known for its upright, slender habit and spineless nature, these cacti can grow very large in their native regions, often reaching upwards of 2 meters! Typically, these cacti do not grow this large when grown indoors. The flowers produced are usually bright ivory or light pink, very large, adorned with burgundy to light pink bracts and dozens of wispy, central stamens. The blooms open as night falls and close again at daybreak, hence the common name Queen of the Night. As the flowers mature, they give way to edible, red fruits, adding additional visual interest.
Fertilize with a cactus fertilizer during active growing periods. Not known to be toxic to humans or pets.
Watering: Very drought tolerant, requiring only occasional watering during the warmer months. It is essential to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. If you are unsure whether or not to water, wait.
