Latin Name: Calycanthus floridus 'SMNCAF'
Description: The loveliest smelling native shrub on the market, the Simply Scentsational Sweetshrub proudly displays highly fragrant, velvety dark maroon blossoms with large, overlapping, lanceolate petals. Eventually, the petals open to reveal smaller inner petals tipped with white, and dark maroon sepals hiding below them in the center of the bloom. The blooms are large, and are arranged lengthwise on the stems in the late spring over the elegant, smooth, medium green, lance-shaped foliage. Although the flowers themselves are fragrant, the leaves and stems are also quite aromatic when crushed. Named sweetshrub or strawberry bush in reference to the fragrance of the plant which is often described as combining hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana.
Grown best in average, moderately moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates close to full shade. Grows somewhat taller in shade than in sun. Prune immediately after flowering to shape.
